Got the SHELTER's addiction... what about you? Empty Got the SHELTER's addiction... what about you?

Post by MarceSe75 September 14th 2010, 10:27 pm

I cannot tell (or even count) how many times I've watched the movie... And, every time I do it, I find sort of new things. Such a shame is that here, in Argentina, the movie's never been officially released. Which it's kinda odd because here gay marriage is absolutely legal. My point is I wish this wonderful movie could be watched by every single soul in the whole world. The subject might be offensive by some, but it's been filmed in a very kind way, that all that floats everywhere around after the end is such a sweet caress in the heart. Jonah Markowitz has accomplished a great goal: we gays can feel comfortable sharing a movie with straight friends... hehehe...
What can I say about Mr. Wright amd Mr. Rowe? AWESOME SCREEN COUPLE!!!! I can't remember the last time I saw such chemistry between two lead actors (gay, straight, male, female or whatever). Tori's character is so lovely that I wish I could be straight to hold her (hehhee). Gabe reminds me a lot of my own bro (he's as funny and supportive as Gabe). Ms Holmes.... what a great actress! She delivers a very down-to-earth credible part. The way she uses the guilt against Zach is so real ( in my life I've met people just like Jeannie). And Cody... he made me wish I could adopt a child one day... (I don't know if I might be a positive man in a child's life but I think it's worth trying.) Ok, gotta go, but before I leave a question: is there the need of a sequel? I think SHELTER is as perfect just the way it is. No need a sequel. Cheer up.

My name is Eowyn and I am a Shelter addict ... *** waves**

I might have you beat on the amount of times I've watched this film. And I completely agree -- Trevor Wright and Brad Rowe have amazing chemistry. I find myself wondering who the original actor was for the part of Shaun and I'm glad that actor backed out at the last minute.

And Gabe ... I have so much love for Gabe. He may be a little crass but everyone would be thankful to have a buddy like Gave in their lives.

I don't see a need for a sequel. It scares me because there would have to be some angst which means Zach and Shaun breaking up and, of course, making up at the end.

I wouldn't mind seeing them cameo in a film. Their wedding ceremony could be in any film.

Hey, Eowyn: I totally agree with you. Maybe in a Shelter sequel they show Zach and Shaun break up or some tension with Jeannie because of raising Cody... Or, maybe, Zach and Shaun might end up being played by new actors (which it would suck!) And that's not what I'd like to see... I think everything is just perfect the way it's been made in the movie. And a wedding scene? I don't think so, only because of the way the characters are portrayed. They're not the typical stereotype kind of gay couple. Don't get me wrong... I would love to see them going thru a wedding but I don't think they're that kind of people. But, if they're going to get married... they should come down to Argentina and have their happy big gay wedding!! hahaha! Gosh, this movie makes me happy every time I watch it.
Hey I'm sorry for not introducing myself, Eowyn. I'm Marcelo. cheer up. Laughing

MarceSe75, I have seen it 14 times, never get bored especially when need uplifting. I have to rate it higher than Brokeback, all in all, one of the best gay films Ive seen in a long time. A simple story that reaches out to many people.

The film never went on general release in UK, at least not yet, though I have a feeling SKY INDIE may catch on. though DVDS of the film are widely available here. INDIE films dont seem to appeal too greatly in UK, its not about being gay themed because ' Mambo Italiano ' was a big hit here for being gay and outragiuos and appealed to the masses. Shelter appears off-beat and intelligent without me sounding too superior if you know what I mean.

Have you seen the film 'Apartment Zero', another interesting movie from Buenos Aires ?

tony in UK.

hey Tony: I loved Mambo Italiano. It was quite funny and got some funny things I actually related it to. Brockback Mountain was kinda disappointment to me. Though I loved the soundtrack and Heath Ledger was superb playing Ennis Del Mar... but the ending felt like depressing. Don't get me wrong: it's a good movie but not the kind I'd like to watch all the time (Shelter is my number one choice). I agree with you, Tony, right here in Argentina there's no much room for independent movies (I love this kind of films); so it's quite hard to get them. There's no place where I could go to buy me the Shelter DVD or bluray... so the only way is download it.
No, I haven't seen 'Aparment Zero'. Gotta look for it around.

Got a question: what FAO means? My english isn't quite good. Thanx.

hey Tony: I'm back again... I read some reviews from Apartment Zero and seems a quite interesting movie... so I'll see if I find it somewhere... and yes I agree with you a 100 percent... Colin Firth is a very handsome actor and a good singer too ( as I saw him singing some ABBA songs in Mamma Mia!). Thanks a lot for your approval of my english (if you heard me speaking in your language you'd change your mind a bit hehehe).

Marce cheers

Hello, my name is Thelan and I'm a Shelterholic: I'm going to be celebrating my 1 year anniversary as a "Sheltie" on November 27th. Even though I can feel the love here, I'm a little ashamed to admit just how many times I've watched the film. All I can say is that, if Shelter were an illegal substance, I would be an addict holed up in a room with the shades down every day, all day long. Which is pretty much similar to how I've spent much of the past year watching the movie over and over and over again. I almost like it when some people say they don't understand the film. Part of me is actually grateful because someone has to live a normal life and keep society running. The rest of the world can have their latest installment of Dancing with the Stars while I rewind through Shelter for the hundredth time - shhh. No regrets though. I'm looking forward to never recovering. silent

OMG - I cannot believe how many times I have watched this movie. I am so so addicted. I have bought a copy of the Movie for every person I know - given it for Christmas, birthdays and just for the sake of giving the joy to someone. I take it everywhere with me and show it to everyone. I spend endless hours on Youtube watching all the different songs with clips of the movie. I am so addicted. It really is the best movie ever and the acting by Trevor and Brad is so fantastic! To think that they are both straight - they did such an amazing job - shows what excellent actors they both are. To anyone (gay or straight) - buy this movie and watch it tonight - it is such a beautiful love story for everyone and really gives you hope! Enjoy all! Peace. Very Happy

Great to read all of your posts.... Yes, I have the addiction too. In fact, one of my YouTube screen names is 'sheltermaniac'. I lent my DVD to a friend of mine and he's kept it for about 6 months now.... needless to say I am having withdrawal.

I agree with you about a sequel. I'm afraid it would be too predictable, and might lose some of the innocence, spontaneity, and sheer joy and romance of the "first" one. It sure says a lot about the writing and directing (and acting) -- the fact that so many people are yearning for more.

I also agree with some of the comments about Brokeback. I personally loved that movie (not a feeling shared by all viewers I know) -- but it is too painful to watch to the end. Heath and Jake, as well as the rest of the cast, were amazing. But so is the cast of Shelter. And maybe I'm a sucker for happy endings, and seeing such incredible chemistry between two people. I never tire of it. There are so many scenes which are powerful -- not just the obvious ones (like Zach pacing back and forth before showing up at Shaun's, or the famous "hug" scene) but just seeing Zach alone sketching/drawing in his "studio" makes an impact as well. No matter how many times I see it, it always hits me deeply --- this is an incredible movie.

Marcelo - One of my Spanish teachers was from Argentina, and she really made me want to go visit sometime. Sounds like a fantastic place! I remember seeing Apartment Zero when it came out it theaters... MANY years ago. It is a pretty intense movie -- definitely worth seeing though. Thanks for reminding me of it, tonyinuk!

geeezz totally addicted to this one, seen the movie like 100 times.. this movie made me accept myself for who i am.. being gay does not necessarily mean to be effeminate, thats what i like about this film, because i for one is gay but i act very straight, not to hide my character as a gay man but it just that i cannot see myself crossdressing or acting effeminately.. just like the guys in this movie

Am afraid I got the "Shelter bug" too Wink I'm a straight woman (so can't relate to Zach's coming out from personal experience), but I do think this movie made me understand the coming out stories of gay friends/colleagues/students of mine even more in a way, because Zach's emotional turmoil is so well portrayed, due to script & direction & acting.
But Shelter has so many themes, that Zach's coming out story is just one of them. To be honest, Shelter to me is exactly what Jonah said in the Backlot: "a movie that happens to have people that are gay in it".

I was checking YouTube earlier this summer to see if I could find suitable clip for a sexual diversity workshop in the highschool I teach at. Stumbled upon Shelter and fell completely in love with it. Yep, multiple viewings → DONE! Very Happy Thought cast & crew ALL did an amazing job, but have to give Trevor special credit for his sublime acting.

Watched the Backlot and MIPtalks too and read the amazing review of Peter Watchorn/Lucie Jorite in the discussion board on Trevor Wright's FB page. Have the DVD on order, so I can finally watch it on my big screen. Can't wait to find out if it's actually possible to be more impressed than I already am. bounce Also not too sure the extras (especially the commentary version with Jonah, Trevor and Brad) are on it even, which is why I ordered it in the first place....*sighs*...

Was initially just interested to see the locations of the film, as I've never been to either LA or the US, but wanted to get more of a feel as to how the mentioned locations really related to each other. So google came up with this forum. Am in awe what you guys were able to find out! As in the words of Cody: "You guys rock!"

As said I've watched it multiple times (lost count already) but will continue to watch it, as every time I watch it I see something new in it and grow to love it even more.
It's one of the greatest love stories I've ever seen and probably the best on screen chemistry between actors (Trevor & Brad, but actually the whole cast) too.
