AfterElton.com 50 Best Gay Movies of 2009
AfterElton has posted up the results of the 50 Best Gay Movies of 2009 and wow look at where Shelter is! Personally I thought it should have been first, I mean I liked Brokeback Mountain to some degree but Shelter is really so much more. In any case, I'm just glad to see it up there on the list.
Check it out!

Hmmmmmm, I agree with you Danny. I don't know why everyone says Brokeback Mountain is the #1 gay movie. I think that is a little exageration. I as well like you Danny, personally believe Shelter should have been #1. Don't get me wrong, #2 I guess it's ok; but I think Shelter sends a more positive message than Brokeback Mountain. I think there should have been a voting poll on this subject in afterelton.com. But still, I am happy that Shelter is on the list anyways.

Hi hbdzh
I adore The Love of Siam, but it is a very different type of film to Shelter and IMHO isn't really directly comparable. Sure, it gets classed as a 'gay movie' because it has the story of two schoolboys falling in love as its backbone, but it also looks at a whole range of other relationship dynamics too; both family and cultural. The two boys, Tong and Mew are forced to confront and cope with loss as well as love, so while there's no denying that the heart of the movie is a tale of puppy-love between two boys who just happen to be gay; mixed in with that is a major subplot of family grief and how different people react to it. The young actors are admirable (and cute) and the film is so multi-layered that it probably has something for everyone, though if you're only interested in what happens to the boys, you may end up fast forwarding through a few other scenes.
It's probably also worth mentioning (for us in the West) that The Love of Siam is available in two versions; the original theatrical release and a later Directors Cut which is 20 odd minutes longer and contains some extra, and IMHO, very pivotal moments between the two lads. (I still can't believe the scene where Mew coyly intimates to Tong that he's gay and Tong says it doesn't make any difference, wasn't actually in the original cut). Unfortunately the DVD's now released in the US and France contain the shorter more inferior version.
LOL! I ended up writing a semi-review which wasn't my intention at all when I started!
